Independent Like the North State

Common Sense Solutions

We are not Democrats. We are not Republicans. We are Americans. We work together to find common sense solutions to our country’s problems.

Not Democrats. Not Republicans. Americans.

We are predominantly independents. Joined by like-minded Republicans and Democrats of good conscience.

Act Like Adults

We believe reaching across the aisle is good. Compromise is not a dirty word. It is adult behavior. Moderation is good. We must work with people we disagree with to find common ground.

Angry with Two Ineffective Political Parties

We are fed up with partisan party politics and petty bickering in Washington. We are committed to a functioning government and ending gridlock. We believe in governing from the center and putting a stop to political party ping pong democracy.

ILNS Vision

Teddy Roosevelt Economic Fairness

We will reclaim TR's trustbusting spirit that helped close our income inequality gap and helped enable all Americans to earn a living wage.

George H. W. Bush Fiscal Responsibility

We strive to balance our budget and be fiscally responsible. We will bring common sense economic policies back to Washington and, as George H.W. Bush said, eliminate the infestation of “voodoo economics.”

Barack Obama Healthcare

We believe all Americans should have healthcare. Affordable Care Act, for all its faults, allowed many Americans to see a doctor. ACA should be repaired and fixed—not repealed and replaced. As Senator Sanders does, we support Medi-Care for all.

Ronald Reagan Environmental Conservation

Ronald Reagan said, “Preservation of our environment is not a liberal or conservative challenge, its common sense.” We agree.

* We are committing to electoral reform. Abolishing gerrymandered districts that are not democratic. Giving all candidates the ability to help govern their country.

2018 Midterm Elections

Many extremists in Congress voted to take health care away from 23 million Americans. They voted to give huge tax cuts to the millionaires while pandering to Americans by tossing us pennies.  In doing so, Congress voted to explode the budget deficit.  We will not be fooled.  Eisenhower would be aghast at this fiscal irresponsibility.  Republicans have abandoned the Repulican party.  Extremists in Congress have abandoned America.
People throughout America and throughout the North State voted for President Trump because they are angry with the inefficiencies and failures of our government.  We share this frustration.
These seven candidates are running for Congress in the North State.

*Gregory Cheadle—R—Redding
*Audrey Denney—D—Chico
*Lewis Elbinger—G—Mt Shasta
*Jessica Holcombe—D—Auburn
*Doug LaMalfa—R—Richvale
*David Peterson—D—Grass Valley
*Marty Walters—D—Quincy

Two Republicans, four Democrats, and a Green.  Among them are some good choices for Congress in CA1.  Get informed.  Make your choice. And vote.

Compromise With People We Disagree With

Reaching Across the Aisle

At Independent Like the North State, we believe it is important to reach out to people you disagree with.  INLS disagrees with those on the far right and the far left.  In this spirit, our goal is to give Congressman LaMalfa an opportunity to make his case.  To listen to people we disagree with.  To give them an opportunity to persuade us.  And to be open to us persuading them.  But always–always–always at the end being committed to finding common ground.

Working Together

All voters should vote for who they wish.  That’s democracy.  But whoever you vote for needs to be committed to working together with all the other members of Congress that other Americans voted for.

Preaching To the Choir Doesn't Count

If your congressman says they voted for lots of legislation, but this was only issues that other members of their own party voted for, they’re not leaders.  They’re trying to pull a fast one on you. Don’t fall for it.  Ask them what they voted for that actually passed.  And if they reply by saying, “The other party didn’t vote for it.”  Stop them right there. It’s their responsibility to make sure the other party votes for it.

  • Nathan Fairchild is a former science teacher and current science advisor. He seeks out genuine data, evidence, and reasoning to make decisions in his personal life and in the voting booth. His mantra is that almost no one would truly agree with the entire platform of either major political party. He can be found visiting the social media lairs of many political groups, asking for sources and surprising both sides with his views. He seeks common ground, which exists far more often that the major parties would like people to think.

  • Chris Verrill, the former development director at KIXE-TV, is an almost lifelong independent. Right out of high school, he registered Republican. A couple of economics classes later, he realized trickle down was just a fairy tale. So he changed to Democrat. That wasn’t much better. So he’s been a registered independent ever since. He’s focused on getting corruption and money out of politics and bringing the Rs and Ds together to find common sense solutions to our country’s problems.
